Piriformis Syndrome Relief Through Yoga

by Carolyn Weatherson

Piriformis syndrome is a real pain in the butt.  It is often associated with

running and other athletic activities such as skating, dancing, stepping and

biking.  It can also happen from spending hours driving or sitting in front

of the computer.  Most often the extreme pain is caused by spasm of the

piriformis muscle which compresses the sciatic nerve.  Inflammation of

the piriformis muscle occurs due to excessive tightness.  The piriformis is a

deep gluteal muscle.  Pain is usually felt in the hip socket and may go down

the back of the leg.  Yoga is a highly effective way to relieve this problem.

This muscle needs to be stretched.  Slowly and properly while paying

careful attention to alignment.  If you have been diagnosed with this

problem I highly recommend that you come to one of my classes!  Please

let me know if you are suffering with this so I can help lead you along the

most beneficial path.  Even chronic, long-time sufferers can learn how to

find relief through Yoga.
